Celebrating the First 12 Months

This past week, our sweet little lady turned one. She is the second child and I must admit has suffered from second child neglect. There is no baby book and I think we stopped taking weekly pictures about halfway through. Up until Christmas, a month prior to turning one, she played with Ninja Turtles and Monster Trucks-she now totes around dolls and gives them kisses. She has been known to wear Big Brother’s clothes so its hard to get mad when people say “isn’t he cute” when we are out and about. So, Scarlett Ann needed a party just for her. A party with lots of pink, a tutu she hated, and a sparkly crown.

Celebrating the first year is just as much about the family as the birthday girl. Lots of big changes happen during the first year. We transitioned from a family of three to four which meant learning a new routine. Declan, while did so beautifully, had to adjust to having someone else taking up mom and dad’s time. We did it though, we survived and loved every minute of it. We have laughed and loved so BIGGER than we could have ever imagined.

God has gifted us with these sweet little ones and each day we spend together is such a blessing.

When it’s your birthday you get to have your cake and eat it too!

As we prepared for Scarlett Ann’s party I knew exactly what I wanted, after all the first birthday is really for the family more than the little ones. We typically order from a local bakery in the area, but I decided to go off my norm and try someone new. For me this is big, because the cake is serious business! I asked around and picked Frosting and Flour Bakery based on a friend’s recommendation.

My request was a two tier white cake along with a smash cake so that I could add my own flowers and cake topper. Frosting and Flour Bakery not only made exactly what I requested, but the cake is to die for delicious!! Like over the top good! Scarlett Ann was apprehensive about diving all in, but once she tasted the goodness, she couldn’t get enough. For Miss Scarlett Ann, she got to have her cake and FINALLY eat it too!

Perfect Chaos

Meet Southern Grit.jpg
There’s only one thing more precious than our time and that’s what we spend it on.

Welcome to our perfectly chaotic life.

Our house is typically a disaster contrary to the picture perfect photos we take. We eat out way too much (our New Year’s Resolution is to remedy that). Most weeknights we dress our children in the clothes that they will wear the next day. I survive on coffee-I have no idea how Kyle functions without the glorious caffeinated beverage. But in the midst of all of that our home is constantly filled with Scarlett’s giggle as she is being chased by big brother, the theme song for Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle is on repeat-thanks to Declan’s fondness for Alexa, and so much love that sometimes I find my cheeks aching from the smiles.

We run on the most perfectly balanced amount of chaos. Sometimes it feels like we are in the eye of a storm, but most of the time I find myself in awe of what God has gifted us and allowed us to create.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
— Isaiah 30:32

You see we never intended to start this crazy adventure. Southern Grit evolved from a simple 5th anniversary gift. For those out there who don’t know, year five is the gift of wood. Kyle working in architecture has always had an eye for design and definitely the best hubby ever-he decided to make my gift. A simple gift created so much more. As he made a few items for our home, we shared his new hobby and the orders started.

God definitely tossed a surprise into our life. So, here we are a young family (well the kids are young, we are well…aging gracefully), with two full time jobs, and now a thriving business. This was not our plan, this was his plan. We’ve questioned our sanity, questioned our schedule, and it’s worth. Doors have continued to open, orders, and opportunities for commissioned designs are in abundance.

We are blessed and oh so thankful everyday that we are able to provide designs for your wedding, birth of new little one, pieces of remembrance, or pieces that just make you happy. We are thankful that we were chosen to walk this crazy path.

So, this is us. We have no idea what the future holds, but we do know that we will go where he leads and enjoy every moment of our perfect chaos.

Spread Joy,
